    Data units and conversions

Two different bases are used in data storage and transfer. Binary (1024) is common in operating systems and memory (1 GB = 1024 MB). Decimal (1000) is used by disk manufacturers and network speeds (1 GB = 1000 MB). This tool supports both bases and automatically performs the bit ↔ byte conversion (1 Byte = 8 bits).

    Which base should I choose?

    • For operating system / RAM / file size → Binary (1024)
    • For disk capacity / internet speed / marketing figures → Decimal (1000)

    Frequently Asked Questions

In binary base, 1 GB = 1024 MB; this is the system used by operating systems and RAM. In decimal base, 1 GB = 1000 MB; disk manufacturers and network speeds use this system. That is why a 1 TB disk appears as about 931 GB on your computer.

Because computers work in binary, powers of 2 (1024) are natural. However, disk and network manufacturers prefer the decimal system (1000), which looks larger in marketing. To avoid confusion, the binary units are also named KiB, MiB, GiB (kibibyte, mebibyte, gibibyte).

1 byte = 8 bits. Bits (b) are usually used for data transfer speed (Mbps), while bytes (B) are used for file size (MB). This tool also accounts for the bit-byte conversion correctly.
