What is a hash used for?

Hash functions are the fastest way to verify whether data has changed. If you take the SHA-256 digest of a file or text and recompute it later and get the same result, the data is intact. In software distribution, the integrity of downloaded files is usually checked this way (checksum).

    • File integrity: Verifying that downloaded data is not corrupted
    • Data fingerprint: Generating a unique identifier without exposing the content
    • Signature & verification: A fundamental building block of digital signature processes

Privacy: All computation is done locally with your browser's Web Crypto API; your text is never sent to any server.

    Frequently Asked Questions

A hash is a one-way function that converts data of any length into a fixed-length, unique 'fingerprint'. The same input always produces the same output, but it is practically impossible to recover the input from the output. It is used for data integrity verification and password storage.

Both are secure hash algorithms from the SHA-2 family. SHA-256 produces a 256-bit (64-character) output, while SHA-512 produces a 512-bit (128-character) one. Because it is longer, SHA-512 theoretically has higher collision resistance; for most applications SHA-256 is more than enough.

MD5 and SHA-1 are now considered cryptographically broken (insecure), and the Web Crypto API in modern browsers does not support MD5. For security-sensitive work, we recommend SHA-256 or higher. SHA-1 is provided only for compatibility with legacy systems.

A plain SHA hash alone is not enough for storing passwords; a 'salt' should be added against attacks, and slow, dedicated algorithms such as bcrypt, scrypt or Argon2 should be used. SHA-256 is better suited for file integrity (checksum) verification.
