What is a subnet calculator used for?
When configuring static IPs on your VPS, VDS and dedicated servers, setting up virtual networks (VLANs) or writing firewall rules, you need to know subnet boundaries accurately. This calculator instantly derives network information from an IPv4 address and CIDR prefix:
- Network address: The first address of the subnet, cannot be used as a host
- Broadcast address: The last address of the subnet, reserved for broadcasting
- Usable host range: Addresses that can be assigned to devices
- Subnet & wildcard mask: The masks needed for configuration and ACLs
Frequently Asked Questions
Subnetting is the process of dividing a large IP network into smaller, manageable subnetworks. This organizes network traffic, improves security and lets you use IP addresses efficiently.
In CIDR (Classless Inter-Domain Routing) notation, a number like /24 indicates how many bits of the IP address specify the network portion. A /24 network has 256 total addresses and 254 usable hosts. The larger the number (e.g. /30), the smaller the network.
In every subnet, the first address is reserved as the 'network address' and the last as the 'broadcast' address, and these cannot be assigned to devices. So although a /24 network has 256 addresses, only 254 are usable as hosts. Exception: /31 and /32 are special cases (RFC 3021).
A wildcard mask is the bit-wise inverse of the subnet mask (e.g. the wildcard of the mask 255.255.255.0 is 0.0.0.255). It is used in Cisco access control lists (ACLs) and some routing configurations.
