What does transfer time depend on?

The download or upload time of a file depends on two things: file size and connection speed. Internet speed is usually given in megabits per second (Mbps), while files are measured in megabytes (MB). This tool automatically applies the 1 byte = 8 bit conversion to accurately estimate the time.

Why are the results an estimate?

The real transfer speed stays a bit below the theoretical value due to server load, network latency, disk performance and TCP/IP protocol overhead. So treat the results as an upper bound for ideal conditions .

    Frequently Asked Questions

Download time is found by dividing the file size by the connection speed. However, internet speed is expressed in bits per second (Mbps) while file size is in bytes (MB), so a unit conversion is done first: 1 byte = 8 bits. For example, a 1 GB file downloads in about 80 seconds on a 100 Mbps connection under ideal conditions.

Mbps (megabit) is often confused with MB/s (megabyte): a 100 Mbps connection downloads at most ~12.5 MB per second. In addition, server load, network latency, Wi-Fi interference, disk write speed and protocol overhead push the real speed below the theoretical value.

Mbps means 'megabit per second', while MB/s means 'megabyte per second'. Since 1 byte is 8 bits, you divide Mbps by 8 to get the MB/s value. For example, 200 Mbps = 25 MB/s.

Yes. By entering the total backup size and your server's upload speed, you can estimate how long it takes to transfer the backup to remote storage. For large data migrations, this helps you plan a maintenance window.
