Nested Server — Lab Infrastructure with Nested Virtualization Support
A nested server is a special hardware configuration that lets you run virtualization inside a virtual machine. You can run platforms like VMware ESXi, Proxmox VE, Microsoft Hyper-V, Eve-NG and GNS3 directly on a VDS and create unlimited virtual machines inside. With 2× Intel Xeon and AMD Ryzen 9 5950X options, it offers high resource capacity — ideal for DevOps labs, cybersecurity test environments, virtualization training and complex network topologies.
Nested Virtualization
Intel VT-x / AMD-V hardware virtualization extensions enabled. A VM inside a VM — seamlessly.
VMware / Proxmox / Hyper-V
All popular hypervisors supported: ESXi, Proxmox VE, Hyper-V, KVM, XCP-ng, Eve-NG.
Xeon E5 + Ryzen 9 Options
2× Intel Xeon (56 threads) for many cores, Ryzen 9 5950X (32 threads) for raw speed.
What Is Nested Virtualization and How Does It Work?
Modern processors' virtualization extensions (Intel VT-x, AMD-V) give physical servers the ability to run virtual machines by default. Nested virtualization passes these extensions 'through' into a virtual machine — meaning you can run another hypervisor (VMware ESXi, Proxmox, KVM) inside a VDS and create virtual machines within it. Adding a hypervisor layer has a small performance cost (5-10% CPU overhead), but it is entirely sufficient for lab and test environments.
In Which Scenarios Is Nested Needed?
Cybersecurity researchers (malware analysis, penetration testing labs), DevOps engineers (Kubernetes node tests, multi-OS test matrices), training institutions (labs for teaching students VMware / Proxmox), network engineers (Cisco / Juniper topology simulation with Eve-NG / GNS3), software developers (multi-OS test environments), Microsoft certification candidates (Hyper-V cluster test environments), and those studying for CCNA / CCNP benefit most from a nested server.
2× Intel Xeon vs Ryzen 9 5950X — Which One?
2× Intel Xeon (dual socket): 28 cores / 56 threads total, 2.6-3.5 GHz, DDR4 ECC. Ideal if you'll run many small VMs at once (Eve-NG topologies, Kubernetes workers) — suited to parallel workloads, with both thread count and RAM capacity well above the Ryzen line. AMD Ryzen 9 5950X (single socket): 16 cores / 32 threads, 3.4-4.9 GHz. Fewer cores but a much higher clock; if you'll run fewer but more powerful VMs (Windows Server cluster, ESXi vSAN test, build/CI agents) and each VM needs to be fast individually, the Ryzen 9 gives better results. Rule of thumb: many VMs = Xeon, fewer but powerful VMs = Ryzen.
